Dreaming About Your Ex

Almost nobody enjoys reporting this dream, and almost everybody has had it. Dreaming of a former partner is extremely common, and the reading that holds up best treats it as a dream about a version of yourself rather than a message about that person. The relationship supplied the cast; the subject is usually something nearer to now.

Not a message from them

There is a widespread folk belief that dreaming of somebody means they are thinking of you. It is memorable, it is comforting or unsettling depending on the case, and there is nothing behind it. Dreams draw on memory, and a person you spent years with is a very large piece of memory, which by itself accounts for how often they appear. People also report dreaming about exes they have no wish to see again, which the folk version has never explained well.

Which version turned up

The details that carry weight are the ones we tend to skip. Was it the person as they are now, or as they were at a particular age? Were you the age you are now? Traditional readings pay close attention to that, because a dream set in an old flat with your younger self in it is generally taken as being about that period of your life rather than about the relationship. Reconciliation scenes, arguments never had, and simply passing each other without speaking all carry separate small readings, and the last is often the most telling.

Why it arrives when it does

Timing frequently has plain causes: an anniversary, a song, an unexpected message, a mutual friend mentioning them, or a new relationship reaching the same stage the old one did. Something in your life recognises a shape it has met before, and the person from the first version of that shape gets cast. What matters most is what the relationship meant to you specifically, which is not something a dictionary has any access to.
