Dreaming About Drinking

Two quite different dreams share this name, and they are interpreted in opposite directions. Drinking water is traditionally taken as replenishment, relief and a need being met. Drinking alcohol pulls the reading towards loosened control, celebration or escape, depending on how the night finished. Working out which of the two you had is the first move, because any dictionary that treats them as one image will send you the wrong way.

Water, thirst and the body

The plainest explanation deserves to come first: people who are genuinely thirsty dream about drinking, and the dream often fails to satisfy it. Reaching for a glass that empties, swallowing without the thirst easing, or finding the tap has run dry are all common reports and all consistent with a dry mouth in a warm room. Where the picture is read symbolically, unsatisfied thirst gets connected with something in waking life you keep returning to without being nourished by it, while clean water drunk easily is read as the reverse.

The alcohol version

Here the tradition turns moralistic in a way modern readers mostly discard. Old dream books treat drink as a warning about character, which tells you more about the centuries they were written in than about anybody dreaming today. A more useful approach looks at the company and the aftermath: drinking with others is generally about belonging, drinking alone about something being managed rather than enjoyed, and feeling drunk without having touched a drop is often described by people who feel out of control of a situation rather than of themselves.

Personal before it is symbolic

Anyone whose life has been marked by their own drinking, or by somebody else's, brings a weight to this dream that no general symbol list can reach, and for those dreamers everything above is close to useless. The same image can be nostalgia, dread, craving or nothing much at all. Read it against your own relationship with the glass rather than against tradition, and if a recurring version of it distresses you, that is worth talking through with a person rather than decoding.
