Dreaming About Stairs

A staircase is one of the few dream images that carries its meaning in its shape. It goes two ways, it costs effort in one direction and offers speed in the other, and the readings have always used it for change of level: standing, mood, understanding, or simply where the dreamer is heading inside a house that stands in for a life.

Up, down, and neither

Climbing gets glossed as progress that is being paid for, and dreamers who describe arriving out of breath are usually taken to be describing something accurate about their week. Descending is read more variously. Some traditions call it decline, others call it going back for something left behind, and modern lists lean heavily towards the latter. Standing on a staircase without moving joins the pictures about indecision, and dreamers describe that version constantly.

When the stairs misbehave

The variants people remember are almost always the ones where the structure fails:

• Missing or badly spaced steps. Read as a plan with a gap the dreamer has already noticed.
• Stairs that keep extending. Grouped with effort that never arrives anywhere.
• A spiral with no landing. Usually read as circling a decision.
• Too narrow or too steep. Taken as a route that was not built for the dreamer.
• Stairs down into the dark. These attach to whatever the basement material already covers.

None of these is a prediction. They describe a feeling about a direction of travel, which is a different thing altogether.

An ordinary caveat

If you live with stairs you find difficult, or you have recently fallen on some, the image is probably reporting your day rather than your fate. Sensation and recent memory get into dreams far more readily than symbols do.
