The moment a watched danger stops being watched, read as something the dreamer had been managing at a distance finally making contact.
This is the one people wake from with a jolt, often with a hand pressed to the place it happened. A bite is the moment a danger that was being watched stops being watched, and the reading follows that logic: something the dreamer had been aware of and holding at arm's length has finally made contact.
The site is treated as the informative detail. A bite to the hand groups with work and with whatever the dreamer has been handling. To the foot or the leg, it attaches to progress and to a journey interrupted. Near the heart or the throat, it goes with speech and closeness. Being bitten while asleep inside the dream is reported by people who feel something developed while they were not paying attention.
Not every version is grim. In older Mediterranean material the snake belonged to medicine, and venom and cure were understood as one substance in different quantities. Interpreters working in that line read the bite as a painful thing that changes the dreamer for the better, which is genuinely different from the European folk reading about betrayal. Neither is authoritative, and both are worth knowing before settling on one.
Somebody who walks through long grass in a country where snakes are a real hazard is dreaming about a plausible event. Somebody in a city where the only snakes are behind glass is dreaming about an idea. Those are not the same dream, and of the two it is the city version that is likelier to be working symbolically.
To be plain about it, nothing here is a warning, medical or otherwise, and no dream image reports on anybody's body or safety.
