Across a great many cultures bread is the food that stands in for food itself, and dream traditions inherited that shorthand wholesale. The common reading is provision: having enough, being able to offer some, and the security that comes from both. Sharing bread carries a second and equally old association with hospitality and welcome.

In Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dream traditions bread has particularly strong associations with sustenance and with the household providing for those in it. In parts of northern Europe the emphasis falls more on labour, on bread as the visible result of work.
