Year of the Pig

Sincere, generous and easy to be around, the Pig brings the cycle to a close with a real appetite for good food and honest company.

The cycle ends where the year finally gets comfortable: the start of winter, the work done and the table full. That is the Pig, twelfth and last of the animals, water by element. You are generous, sincere and easy to be around, and you take more pleasure in ordinary comforts than most people allow themselves. One caution about dates: a birthday in January or the first days of February usually belongs to the previous year's animal, not to the animal of the calendar year, because the Chinese year turns at the lunar new year.

Pigs are trusted because they are trustworthy. You say what you mean, you do not play games, and you assume other people work the same way, which is both your charm and your blind spot. Conflict upsets you, so you smooth things over, sometimes long past the point where a straight sentence would have solved it.

Strengths: Generosity that is never for show. You lend, host, feed and help without keeping score, and people remember it for years. You are honest, patient and surprisingly hardworking when someone is counting on you. You forgive easily and make a home feel like somewhere people want to stay.

Challenges: You trust too fast and give too much, and a certain kind of person notices. Saying no feels rude to you, so your time fills with other people's requests. You avoid confrontation until the problem is large, and you comfort yourself with food, shopping or an easy evening when something harder is needed.

Work and money: You do well in food and hospitality, care work, teaching, retail, construction and entertainment, anything sociable with a visible result at the end of the day. You earn steadily and enjoy spending on comfort and on other people, so saving needs a system rather than good intentions.

Love and compatibility: You are affectionate, faithful and openly warm, and family life is where you are happiest. You give a great deal, so choose someone who gives back rather than someone who simply accepts. Speak up early when something bothers you, because your patience is long and then it snaps, and the other person had no idea anything was wrong.

Best matches: The Snake will test you, sitting at the point of the cycle furthest from your own, keeping its reasons private while you want everything said out loud at the table. You are much happier with a Rabbit or a Goat: the Rabbit runs a household as peaceful as the one you want, and the Goat meets your gentleness and gives your care back. The Tiger is the ally you would not have predicted, bold enough to guard what you build.

Advice: Practise one polite refusal a week until it stops feeling unkind. Notice who gives back to you, not just who enjoys your company. And keep the good food and the good company, because they are how you keep your strength.
