Mercury never reverses direction. It passes Earth on the inner track and appears to slide backwards for about three weeks, three or four times a year.
Mercury retrograde is something our eyes do, not something the planet does. Mercury never slows, halts or turns around: it goes on running its orbit the same way round at much the same speed, and for roughly three weeks at a time it merely looks, from where we stand, as though it were drifting backwards against the fixed stars. This happens three or four times in an ordinary year, and astrology treats each stretch as a spell for going back over things rather than setting them in motion.
Mercury is the innermost planet and the quickest. It finishes one lap of the Sun in about eighty-eight days while Earth needs a little over three hundred and sixty-five, so Mercury laps us again and again. Once each cycle it slips through the narrow gap between ourselves and the Sun, and while it is going by on the inside, the direction it appears to travel across our sky flips.
The everyday version of this is overtaking on a motorway. Pull past a slower car and, for as long as the manoeuvre lasts, that car seems to slide backwards against the hills behind it, although it never stopped going forwards for a moment. Nothing happened to the other car. What changed was the relationship between the two vehicles, and the distant scenery gave the illusion away. Mercury measured against the fixed stars is that same picture on an enormous scale.
One thing follows from that, and it is the thing most articles skip. Retrograde motion is not an event happening to Mercury. It is a line of sight. Watch the solar system from above the Sun instead of from the surface of a moving Earth and the reversal is simply not there.
The gap from one retrograde to the next is roughly a hundred and sixteen days, which is the time Mercury needs to catch Earth up and get past it again. Three gaps of that size fit inside a calendar year with room left over, which is why most years carry three retrograde periods and some catch a fourth.
Each period runs for about three weeks, usually between twenty and twenty-five days. Add them up and Mercury spends close to a fifth of any given year in apparent reverse. That figure is worth keeping in mind whenever the phase gets blamed for a bad fortnight, because this is not a rare condition of the sky. It is one of the more routine ones.
Two moments bookend every period, and both carry names you will meet on any calendar. A station is the day the apparent direction changes over, when the planet seems to hang motionless against the stars before setting off the other way. The station that opens the period is called the station retrograde, and the one that closes it is the station direct.
Then there is the shadow, sometimes called the storm, which explains why people report the mood starting early and outstaying its welcome. Mercury crosses the same slice of the zodiac three separate times in one cycle: forwards, then in reverse, then forwards again. The first crossing is the pre-retrograde shadow and the last is the post-retrograde shadow, each running a fortnight or so. Astrologers read the first pass as the one that raises an issue, the reverse pass as the one that reopens it, and the final pass as the one that puts it away. Astronomically the shadow is nothing new. It is the same patch of sky being covered more than once.
Mercury is named after the Roman god who carried messages, and the planet has been tied to that job ever since: speech, writing, learning, short journeys, trade, contracts, and by extension every device we now use for all of them. Take those functions and turn them inwards and the standard advice more or less writes itself. Almost every verb recommended for the period begins with re-.
Look at what is absent from that list. None of it depends on believing that a planet caused anything, and all of it is decent practice in any three weeks of the year.
No known mechanism connects the apparent path of a small planet to a lost parcel or a dead hard drive. Mercury retrograde alters nothing physical here: not gravity, not light, nothing measurable at all reaching a phone or a train timetable. Devices fail during the other forty weeks at the rate they fail during these ones.
What genuinely changes is attention. Give a stretch of time a name and a reputation, and people start logging the events that match it while quietly discarding the ones that do not. A cancelled meeting inside a marked three weeks becomes evidence; the same cancellation in an unmarked week is just a Tuesday. That is an ordinary feature of how memory works, and it keeps the reputation alive without any help from astronomy.
Which leaves a sensible middle position available. The event is real, it is visible, and it can be calculated centuries ahead with complete accuracy, while its effect on your inbox has never been demonstrated. If the label prompts you to back up your files, check a booking and answer the email you have been dodging, the habit is worth keeping whatever you make of the cause. It stops being harmless at exactly the point where it becomes a reason to postpone a decision that needed making.
